Dr Ben Sim is an Australian and UK trained Ophthalmologist with special interest in cataract, oculoplastics & reconstructive surgery practicing full time exclusively in the Hunter/ Newcastle Region.
He is a Consultant Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) at the John Hunter Hospital and Kurri Kurri District Hospital where he trains ophthalmology trainees in both intra- and extraocular surgery. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle where he teaches medical students.
Dr Sim has a Masters in Public Health from University of Sydney and completed his Ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. He then pursued 2 years of Oculoplastics subspecialization at King’s College Hospital, London and Bristol Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom where he further developed his surgical skills in a wide range of procedures treating periocular skin cancers, lacrimal and eyelid disease.
What Dr Sim is most passionate about is understanding the delivery of eyecare around the world. He has worked with the Fred Hollows Foundation in Nepal and Alice Springs to gain insight into the delivery of ophthalmology services to Indigenous Australians. He has subsequently both worked, volunteered and observed eyecare delivery in 6 continents and just under 30 different countries around the world in both developed and developing countries.
